This learning community brings together first- and second-year students interested in electoral politics, public policy, public administration and the legal professions. All first-year students are assigned a returning student member as a peer mentor. The community will offer courses only to community members in philosophy, political science, history and writing. Important institutions, processes, political problems of government and politics in representative, democratic, totalitarian and modernizing political systems. 4 Credit Levels: Undergraduate The Major in Philosophy, Politics and Law (PPL) is an interdisciplinary major focused on law, politics, government and citizenship. It draws on philosophy, political science, history and other fields of study. PPL majors learn to think critically, write well, and debate social, political, ethical, and legal issues in a compelling way. PPL offers good preparation for a variety of careers, but is particularly aimed at those considering a career in law, management, politics or public service, including civil and diplomatic service and local government. gw1pkg.gw1view The teaching material at UKZN is English, and UKZN requires a passport in English (language spoken at home or additional first language (FAL)) at level 4 (50% or higher), but note that the Law College requires a pass in English as a mother tongue at level 5 or in English as FAL at level 6. For admission to diplomas or alternative access programs, lower performance in English may be acceptable. In the senior certificate, a passport for English as a first or second language HG E is required. • 30 April 2022 (new applicants as well as returning UKZN students). • The application must be submitted directly to UKZN via the form for study abroad, exchanges and short-term programmes. This is a standard introductory course in microeconomics. It focuses on the functioning of the market system and focuses on the economic interactions between individuals, companies and governments. Topics include supply and demand, economic decision-making by consumers and businesses, social efficiency, competitive, oligopolistic and monopolistic markets, market failures, and the role of government in the economy.
Issues such as the environment, taxation and income distribution are addressed. Students can take ECON 160 and 162 in any order. Offered every semester. 4 Cr. Levels: Undergraduate. PPL majors often complete internships at law firms, state and local government agencies, political campaigns, nonprofits, college programs, and a variety of other organizations. These experiences can be valuable, and PPL encourages students to actively seek internships early in their bachelor`s career. Investigation of the most important ethical issues related to the natural environment.
Topics may include the nature of human obligations to and in relation to future generations, non-human animals, ecosystems and endangered species; environmental policy decision-making principles; environmental justice; and the relationship between environmental protection and people, technology and economic growth. 4 credits. Levels: Undergraduate • Previously enrolled UKZN students who wish to return to complete their programmes. Applicants must provide their contact information on the payment slip and provide proof of payment when submitting their application. • All South African first-time applicants to UKZN to enter the first semester (February) of an academic year (class 12 as well as undergraduate students transferred from other institutions) must apply to the Central Applications Office (CAO). The PPL program also encourages participation in educational programs abroad. PPL`s academic advisors will work one-on-one with students to ensure that academic achievements obtained abroad are compatible with the completion of the major in a timely manner. The UKZN has developed an online application system. This introductory course in medical ethics examines topics at the interface of normative ethics and medicine. We spend a lot of time addressing issues such as (assisted) reproduction, abortion, improvement (through drugs or genetics), issues related to medical experiences, as well as broader issues such as the equitable distribution of health resources and global health. We also deal with issues such as confidentiality and truth-seeking, informed consent and patient autonomy. This course deals primarily with the normative issues at stake. It is not intended to provide immediate practical advice to health professionals. 4 credits. Levels: Undergraduate. • Limited new applications will only be accepted for general study programs in the humanities and management sciences where admission is considered. Independent research is actively supported by the PPL Honors program.
The program provides intensive faculty support in writing an honorary thesis that reflects students` research interests in PPL fields. In recent years, students have written theses on human rights, immigration, civic responsibility in unjust legal systems, inequality, legal interpretation, monetization in law, constitutional theory, asylum for victims of sex trafficking, corporate responsibility, basic income and the obligation to comply with the law, inter alia.
