The Legal Administration Service reviews and organizes administrative separation files and assists in the preparation of Judge Advocate General`s Manual investigations. While lawyers do their best to provide legal assistance and advice on all matters in their area of practice, regardless of jurisdiction, the majority of services offered by legal aid lawyers at Parris Island are provided in Beaufort County, South Carolina. The Head of the Parris Island Legal Services Support Team is responsible for providing direct legal services to the Parris Island, S.C. MCRD/RRA; MCAS Beaufort, S.C.; MCLB Albany, Georgia; MCSF Blount Island, Florida; and general support for all other commands supported by the Legal Services Support Section – East, Marine Corps Facilities – East.
The Legal Services Support Team and their respective services are located at 27 Atsugi Street, Building 400, Marine Corps Recruit Depot, Parris Island (between the Commissioner and the Fire Hall). The Parris Island OHSA Legal Aid Service, which provides legal advice to MCRD Parris Island, Eastern Recruiting Region, MCAS Beaufort, MCLB Albany and MCSF Blount Island, is available to provide legal advice on all matters relating to the Military Civilian Relief Act. landlord and tenant issues, leases, family law, powers of attorney, estate planning and wills. Adoptions, immigration and a range of other legal issues faced by military personnel, retirees and their dependents. The Legal Aid Offices, formerly located at Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort and Marine Corps Logistics Base Albany, are now part of the Parris Island LSST Legal Aid Division. Victims or witnesses of crimes involving military personnel benefit from both military justice and mutual legal assistance. The Legal Aid Department provides free professional legal assistance to active duty members, pensioners, their family members, victims of crime and some survivors of deceased members of the armed forces in areas such as wills and estate planning, family law (legal separation, uncontested adoptions, uncontested custody, undisputed name changes), consumer protection (consumer contracts, credit reports, debt and small claims court), immigration and naturalization, landlords` and leases` rights, and the Military Civil Relief Act. The Legal Assistance Division also conducts predeployment briefings for operational units. Powers of attorney and notarial services are also available.
The Parris Island Legal Services Support Team hosts all legal activities for the Marine Corps Recruit Depot Parris Island and the Eastern Recruiting Region. It also provides military justice, defence and legal assistance functions to Marine Corps Air Station Beaufort. The various services provide a variety of legal services to commandos, military personnel and, in some cases, family members and retirees. Legal advice on “entrepreneurial ventures” or similar matters that are not “personal” in nature. Assistance in filing damages or injunctions against the United States or Uniformed Services Medical and Civil Health Program (CHAMPUS)/TRICARE claims. Obligations of defence counsel, including advice in criminal matters, advice under article 31 (b) and extrajudicial sanctions. Active duty members or dependents of active duty members above E-4 may be required to provide evidence that they are unable to receive civilian legal services in order to receive legal assistance from the Marine Corps.
