Employees are eligible for health, dental, vision and life insurance on the 1st of the month following the date of hire. Pisgah Legal Services pays (PLS) 100% of the employee and 50% of the dependent costs for BCBS medical and dental coverage. PLS 50% of employee coverage costs for BCBS Vision coverage. PLS pays 100% of the long and short-term disability coverage, life insurance coverage of 5x base salary + an additional $15,000 of life insurance coverage and AD&D. 401k pension plan after 6 months of employment. Pisgah Legal Services (PLS) is a non-profit legal aid organization managed by a local board of directors. Located in the Blue Ridge Mountains of western North Carolina (WNC), Pisgah Legal Services provides free civil legal assistance to low-income individuals in WNC. The organization currently has offices in Asheville, Brevard, Burnsville, Hendersonville, Highlands-Cashiers, Marshall, Newland and Rutherfordton.
With over 100 dedicated staff, including over 30 lawyers and program staff, and an active group of 300 pro bono lawyers, Pisgah Legal Services provides free services to nearly 20,000 people per year to meet their basic needs, primarily in the areas of housing poverty, public services, domestic violence prevention, health care, immigration and consumer law. As part of these projects, the program director works with a variety of individuals and partners in our area and throughout North Carolina, including health and social care providers, local organizations, immigrant advocacy groups, housing partners, local bars, the NCBA and others. The Program Director integrates diversity, equity, inclusion and accessibility principles and practices into pro bono PLS programs. • Commitment to PLS`s mission, values and vision. • Provide direct legal advice and represent immigrants before USCIS, EIOIR, BIA, Small Claims Court, District Court, Superior Court, and other administrative and judicial forums as required. (This may include representation, preparing for self-representation, obtaining continuations for evaluation, and referring cases to other lawyers.) • Conducts interviews with clients with a trauma-informed approach. • Document all work in the Legal Server case management software. • Organization and execution of awareness and education presentations. • Develop and maintain community relationships, including other non-profit organizations, government officials, government employees, community leaders and others. • Travel in our service area and also to meetings or conferences in other parts of NC. • Adhere to program priorities and case management policies, procedures and standards, as well as the highest professional and ethical standards.
• Keeps abreast of developments in the law and disseminates information to staff, volunteer lawyers and the public. • Work regularly with volunteers, including pro bono lawyers. • Fundraising support in coordination with the PLS development team.
